It is really hard to believe that it has been eight years since the attacks of 9-11. In some ways, it feels like such a long time ago, and in some ways, it feels like it was yesterday. One of my friends mentioned that this event is what the Kennedy assassination was to the earlier generation - we will always remember where we were and what we were doing that morning. And it certainly shifted the way we felt about the world and our place in it, as individuals and as a nation. I don't think I know anyone who either wasn't personally affected by the events of that morning or who doesn't know someone who was. For those of us who lived in the Washington, DC area, we had just begun to relax a little when the sniper attacks happened one year later. For the second year in a row, being in school was surreal and we felt unsafe. And I'm talking about the teachers, not the students!
It is important to mark this anniversary, not just to remember those we lost and the heroes we found that day, but also to remind us that we live in a world where things can change in an instant. And also to remind us to be grateful for all that we have. We should try to keep that lesson of 9-11 with us each day, not just once a year.
